Cuba – A New Frontier
Ocean Enterprises Travel trip leaders Sherrie and Timm Burks took an adventurous group of travelers on our first group trip to Cuba this past May! The excited group of 20 spent time touring Havana, following by a week diving Jardines de la Reina (The Gardens of the Queen) aboard the new Jardines Aggressor I liveaboard. “Our time in Havana went by too quickly, leaving us with the desire to return for more” according to Sherrie. “Rates near the top of my numerous trips on a liveaboard” according to one traveler. The Jardines Aggressor I is a 110ft beautiful yacht that holds 20 passengers, along with 6 crew members.
With being able to travel to Cuba for American still being new, the trip was licensed through an educational program provided by the Oceans for Youth Foundation, who arranged presentations by Marine Biologists during the trip, which made everything they saw that much more meaningful.
“The people of Cuba were very friendly and welcoming everywhere we went” as said by Sherrie.
The group was treated to many memorable dives during their week on the liveaboard. Sizable reef sharks were seen on almost every dive, along with schools of tarpon, grunts, and snapper, as well as a variety of man other reef fish. Also common on their dives were black and Nassau grouper, and some divers even got to spend some time with the goliath grouper!
Outside of diving and touring Havana, they had the opportunity to take a tour through the mangroves and experience local saltwater crocodiles up close and personal. Check out Sherrie’s point of view crocodile video as she got within inches of one!
They also had the chance to visit a local beach which was inhabited by hermit crabs, iguanas, and most interesting of all, the Cuban Hutia, which is a local rodent (pictured to the right).
“The Cuba trip was amazing in every way! Sherrie & Timm did a fantastic job with everything and my only sadness was that we had to leave” according to another traveler.
